Confessions - Minato Kanae

Thú tội is Stephen Snyder's 2014 translation of Kanae Minato's 2008 debut novel, KokuhakuIt is a suspense novel that traces the impact of a schoolteacher's act of revenge, and it deals with themes of motherhood and power as well as social issues like AIDS and hikikomori. The novel's chapters are in the form of a one-sided conversation, a letter, a diary entry, a reminiscion, a blog post, and a one-sided phone call. The novel was also adapted into a 2010 Japanese feature film of the same name; Minato has received many awards for her debut work.
This illustrated version of the book is one of my course project. The artwork was done using watercolour and retouching with Adobe Photoshop.
My inspiration for this cover was the action of taking an oath, the students are confessing. Their faces are covered to serve the purpose of hiding the yet to be revealed murderer. Sitting right in the middle is a red doll indicating the victim in the story- a 4 year-old child, daughter of the students' homeroom teacher.
1. First sketch
3. Remove the  traditional artwork's background and add new one drawn on Adobe Photoshop
4. The original typeface I chose for the book's title is TP Lost Land, I proceeded to change the size and length of some alphabets to match with the layout of my illustration then add crystallize effect
